How to make Reddit story videos
A Reddit story video is a post read aloud by a voiceover, over looping gameplay, with captions that follow every word. To make one: pick or write a story with a strong first line, choose a clear voice, put gameplay behind it, caption every word, and keep it to one or two minutes.
Why the format works
It is faceless: no camera, no on-screen presenter. The story holds the viewer's mind, the gameplay holds their eyes, and the captions mean they can follow with the sound off. Every part is there to stop people scrolling away.
That also means every part has to be good. A flat story over great gameplay still gets skipped.
Pick or write the story
The story types that work best have a clear conflict and a payoff: “Am I the asshole?” posts where viewers can take sides, petty revenge, workplace reversals, entitled people getting put in their place, relationship reveals, and creepy encounters that end on a chilling line.
Be careful about reading other people's posts word for word. A Reddit post belongs to whoever wrote it, and it may name or describe real people. The safer route is to write your own story in the format, or to use a story you have rights to. Fiction in the style of a post is fine, and it's what most of these channels publish.
When you write, cut hard. Open with the conflict in the title, skip the backstory, and give every paragraph a turn. End on a payoff, a verdict question, or a twist, never on “anyway, that's what happened”.
Make the first line do the work
The title is read first, so it is the hook. It should tell the viewer the conflict and make them want the answer: “My sister uninvited me from her wedding, so I sent the gift anyway”, not “A story about my sister”. If the title doesn't make you want to hear the rest, rewrite it before anything else.
The second line should start the action, not set the scene. “Some background: I'm 27 and I work in accounting” loses people. “The invite came back in the post, torn in half” keeps them.
Then test it. Read the first ten seconds aloud. If you'd scroll away, so will everyone else.
Choose the voice and pace
The voice is the whole delivery, so pick one that suits the story: warm for a family drama, dramatic for a creepy one, energetic for revenge. Listen to the first 10 seconds before you commit. A slightly faster pace than normal speech usually works better on short-form feeds, as long as words stay clear.
Gameplay, captions and the post card
The background should move constantly but ask for no attention: parkour runs, racing, satisfying puzzle games. Avoid gameplay with its own story or speech. Use footage you have the rights to.
Captions should show a few words at a time, in big bold text in the middle of the screen, highlighting each word as it's spoken. Viewers read along, which keeps them watching.
Most of these videos open on a card styled like a forum post, with the title, a username and the community, so viewers know what format they're watching in the first second. Keep it clearly a story card, not a screenshot of a real person's post.
Get the length right
One to two minutes suits most stories. Shorter than 30 seconds rarely has room for a payoff; longer than two minutes needs a story that keeps turning. A long story can be split into Part 1 and Part 2, with Part 1 ending on a cliffhanger, so viewers come back for the end.
Write to the length, don't trim to it. Read aloud at a brisk pace, a one-minute video holds roughly 140 words, so a story that needs 400 words to land is a two-part story, not a rushed one.
Making them in Renafy
Renafy's story videos do all of this in one form, on every plan.
- Pick a story type and a length from 30 seconds to 3 minutes, say what it's about, and let AI draft it. Or paste or write your own. You can edit everything it writes.
- Set the post card: title, username, community, upvotes and comments.
- Pick an AI voice and a pace: normal, fast or faster.
- Pick gameplay from the gameplay library, or use your own video, and a caption style. Captions follow every word automatically.
- Render it. A 3-minute story is made as two videos, split at a Part 2 line, and drafts come with a post caption and hashtags to copy.
Questions
Can I use real Reddit posts?
Only ones you have the rights to use. Posts belong to their authors and may describe real people. Writing your own story in the format avoids both problems.
Do Reddit story videos make money?
They can, through a platform's creator programme or campaigns that ask for them, but it depends on your views and the platform's current rules. Nothing guarantees income.
What gameplay should I use?
Constant, low-attention movement: runs, racing, puzzles. Use footage you have rights to, such as Renafy's gameplay library or your own recordings.
Do I need to show my face or record my voice?
No. The format is faceless, and an AI voice reads the story.
How do I write the post caption?
Restate the hook in a line, ask viewers to take a side (“who was wrong here?”), and add a few hashtags for the story type. Comments help a video travel, and a question invites them.
